Musings from Andie

Dear Branch Members,

Hello, one and all... from the Easter Bunny (my other identity at the L.H. Hospital Gift Shop).  Did you survive?  Of course you did!

I was very pleased with the last meeting and I thought it went very well.  We have new members and the membership co-chairs and I will be using any ethical means to get more.  I think word-of-mouth is best.  Blabbing is better.  Ask anyone!

Anyways, we have two more meetings in which you can go off your diet by eating all the desserts we have each meeting at the Great Island.  And Ruby Tuesday.  And the Dutch Haven.  Is there any hope for us?  Tune in next month for the latest carrot stick and celery recipes.  I wonder if they come dipped in chocolate?

Bonnie Rosamilia was named Teacher of the Year in Williamsport.  At the next meeting we'll give her a hearty round of applause.  She deserves it!

See you soon.  Just try to behave, or whatever.

Sincerely,

                           Andie

Warning! Voting May Be Habit-forming

Voting is a habit.  People who vote have a pattern of voting and are members of social networks of voters.  Their friends, coworkers, family members, and neighbors also vote regularly.

On the flip side, people who do not have the habit of voting may be members networks that don't include many regular voters.

AAUW branches can increase the numbers of regular voters by bringing nonvoters into their network.  This can be done woman to woman.

Book Club Reminder

April meeting and book club discussion "Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts.  An Ophra Book Club book that is moving, funny, and takes you on an unforgettable journey of a 17 year old, 7 months pregnant, left stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, OK with little money and knowing no-one.  Though some members have already read this book and I understand it was a made for TV show, we hope you will join in on the discussion.  There are several copies available at Ross Library and my copy will soon be available to pass around should you wish not to purchase it.

Minutes of the March 6, 2008 meeting of the
Lock Haven Branch of AAUW

Present:  Laura Long, JoAnn Marcinkevage, Diane Whitaker, Donna Wright, Toni Tomasi, Pat Burd, Carol Hildebrand, Betty Nelson, Amy Carroll,
Margaret Irvin, JoAnn Bowes, Beth Bropst, Michele Long, June Almes,
Carol Pollard, Bobbie Way, Roberta Doyle, and Andrea Bennett.
Guest:  Bobbie Jo Simcox.

Diane Whitaker presented the program, Remembering the Fifties, using one of the Bifolkal Kits available from the Ross Library.  A sing along included Howdy Doody Time, Rock Around the Clock, and Happy Trails.

JoAnn Marcinkevage, following a brief biography, presented the Gateway to Equity Award to Bobbie Jo Simcox.  A lovely bouquet accompanied the certificate.   Ms. Simcox’s thank you was eloquent.

President Bennett called the business meeting to order at 8:10 PM.

As there were no additions or corrections to the minutes of the last meeting, the minutes stand approved as presented.

A detailed Treasurer’s Report, submitted by A. Black, was read by R. Doyle.  As of 03.06.08, the checking account balance is $2451.55 and the savings account balance is $1550.18 for a total of $4003.05.  The Treasurer’s Report accepted and placed on file.

Committee Reports:

Program:  The next meeting April 3rd will be discussion of the book, “Where the Heart Is”.

Membership:  M. Long is in the process of reviewing her materials.  She distributed applications for memberships to those requesting them.  Noting that if you get someone to join, you will receive a certificate.  Window stickers are available.  M. Long had the members introduce themselves and welcomed the two newest members, J. Bowes and J. Almes.  C. W. Pollard recommended that applications for membership be available at the book sale.   She is also willing to do an accompanying information and history display.  Consensus of the group was that this was a great idea.

Care & Concern:  Linda Frye had both knees replaced and is doing well.

Price & Sort:  T. Tomasi stated that help is still needed.  She thanked the LHU Men’s Soccer Team for their help.  The garage is full.  The schedule is going around and each member is asked to sign up for a minimum of 4 hours.  Help is needed specifically on Thursday morning.  C. Hildebrand reported that for the second year, we would be receiving the maximum grant of $1600.00 from Thrivent financial for Lutherans.

Write Read Write:  L. Long has displayed the books collected on table in the back.  The books are going to two fifth grade classes at Renovo Elementary.   She will be calling next week to make arrangements to deliver the books.  Anyone interested in accompanying her should talk to her.  Ms. Long also had voter registration forms and requests for absentee ballots available for anyone interested.  Ms. Long said that Mayor Villelo is running for U.S. Congress (Rep. Petersen’s vacant seat).  You may want to check out his website or blog.

Scholarship:  B. Brobst distributed flyers to be posted.  The committee has reformatted the application and will be bringing it to the next meeting.  Last year, there were only three applicants.  She stressed the need to get the information out there.  She also is passing the envelope for LAF.

A. Bennett reported 04.26.08 is the date for the Children’s Festival.  She will be in contact with Lisa May to have a sign up sheet available at April’s meeting.

P. Burd reported that Susan Rickers is to call her back about the Bloodmobile we usually schedule in June.  J. Marcinkevage stated that they are consolidating the bloodmobiles and offered that as a reason she has not called back.  P. Burd will contact Ms. Rickers again and if it is a go will have sign up sheets at the book sale.

C. W. Pollard has been publicizing AAUW at LHU’s web site and is going to extend her efforts to the paper.

Publicity:  Jim Runkle from The Express was here before the meeting to take pictures for an article in The Express.

Motion to adjourn at 8:55 PM by P. Burd; motion carried.

Refreshments and lively discussion followed.   The members wish to congratulate fellow member, Bonnie Rosamilia, for being named Teacher of the Year for the South Williamsport School District.

Respectfully Submitted; Roberta A. Doyle, Acting Recording Secretary

From the EF Chair

The applications for graduate and undergraduate educational aid, to be awarded by our Branch in July, are available at the main desk in Ross Library.  An applicant must have been a resident of Clinton County for at least 4 years.  Other requirements are listed below.  All applications must be submitted by June 1, to give the award committee time to consider each application carefully.  Applicants should request transcripts soon, so that they will arrive before the June 1 deadline.

Undergraduate educational aid is to help women whose education has been interrupted, and who wish to follow a vocation for which a four year college degree will be required.  The undergraduate applicant must be at least three years beyond high school graduation, and accepted for the year 2007-2008 at an accredited college or university in a bachelor's degree program.  In addition, she will have been in college when her studies were interrupted, having earned at least a quarter of the credits required for the degree.

An applicant for  graduate educational aid must have been accepted at an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program, and have been a resident of Clinton County for at least 4 years, not only as a student at LHUP.

AAUW Lock Haven Branch members can help the educational aid award process in the following ways:

1.  Bring in lots of books to be sold at our Book Sale, and buy lots of books while you are sorting, stacking, arranging books--not to mention encouraging other customers to buy, buy, buy.... The money made at the Book Sale determines how much aid can be awarded  this year.

2.  When you come to the April meeting, please have in mind a place where you can hang a poster, a spot where a likely  candidate might read it.  Take one, or more, (distributed at Branch meetings) and be sure to post it.

3.  Spread the news about the AAUW educational aid program, so that we have the benefit of word-of-mouth publicity, as well as print and radio media, to let all eligible women know about AAUW educational aid available to them.
