Musings from
Andie
This is your new President coming your
way. I do hope you all had a wonderful summer doing all
kinds of things. In the meantime, while you were playing,
your Board has been busy setting the agenda for this coming
year, and also sorting out and making plans for Candidate
Night. I must add that it is coming along nicely. The room
has been booked, John Lipez has been contacted, the
invitations are going out soon, and all is well in the
world--Or at least our part of it.
We have a new VP for Programming, Diane
Whitaker. She's come up with some interesting programs. I
look forward to this coming year and hope you will, too!
If any of you out there in AAUW land
knows of a program we could sponsor or initiate, please call
me.
I hope to see all of you soon at
Carol's house for the Pot Luck Dinner. Carol is going to
tell us about her recent trip to Africa with one suitcase
out in the rough. It could be an inspiration to some of us.
I look forward to our first meeting. I
know you'll be there.
Until September. . .
Sincerely,
Andie

2007 Scholarships
The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW
has awarded educational aid for 2007-08 to three outstanding
women. Two of the awardees are in graduate school, and one
is finishing her undergraduate degree.
The undergraduate award is
named in honor of Pamela Piette, a former member of our
Branch, who is retired and lives in Illinois. Pam continues
to contribute to our scholarship fund annually.
Recipient of this year’s
Pamela Piette Undergraduate Award is Tracy Foster. Tracy
has received several of our educational aid awards while
studying for her Bachelor’s degree in nursing at
Pennsylvania College of Technology. Tracy is employed at
Lock Haven Hospital Extended Care facility as Admissions
Coordinator, and attends college part-time. She has a
husband and two children, and has been juggling family,
work, and educational responsibilities for several years.
The good news is that Tracy will complete the credits for
her BSN in December, 2007.
The graduate awards are named
in memory of Marilyn Gardner, a Lock Haven Branch past
president and division (state) past president. One of the
2007-08 awardees, Stephanie Reichelderfer, is working on her
Master’s degree at Temple University, with plans to continue
on for her Ph.D. in history. She hopes to pursue
post-doctoral research and to teach at the college level.
Stephanie graduated from Lock Haven High School and Lock
Haven University. She is married and is employed part-time
as a bank teller.
A second Marilyn Gardner
Graduate Award goes to Julie Story, an instructor in the
Department of Academic Development and Counseling at Lock
Haven University. Julie is pursuing the D.Ed. degree in
Educational Leadership, with emphasis in Curriculum and
Instruction, at the University of Phoenix Online.
The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW
is grateful to Thrivent Financial which matched $1600 of our
Book Sale dollars. The additional funds made it possible to
award two graduate educational aid awards of $2000 this year
as well as the $500 undergraduate award.
Many thanks to all members
and others who helped at the Book Sale, and special thanks
to Chairpersons Toni Tomasi and Carol Hildebrand. Thanks
also to the Educational Aid Awards Committee members: Amy
Carroll, Carol Hildebrand, Toni Tomasi, Diane Whitaker, and
Eleanor Zimmerman. They worked thoughtfully and diligently
to assure that the awards were fair and appropriate.
All of the award recipients
plan to attend the September dinner meeting. Please come
and give them a warm welcome.
Beth Brobst, Chair,
Educational Foundation
