LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Chapter

Lock Haven, PA

Pat Burd, President

Editors:  Diane Whitaker & Bobbie Way

Greetings from Pat

Dear Branch Members,

April’s business meeting went smoothly.  In a few days Andrea Bennett, Diane Whitaker, and Bonnie Rosamilia will help in leading us for two years.  I know we are all so very appreciative of their accepting the leadership of the offices of President, Program Vice President, and Secretary.

Thanks to Andrea Bennett for providing us with great, diverse programs, all of which she handled in an organized, responsible manner.  She is to be commended.  Thanks to Carol Hildebrand for being a proficient, poised officer.  I know we can all agree that she has been an excellent secretary.

Thanks to Nell Carnein who will be leaving the area and starting a new life for retirement.  She has been so good in leading in many, many areas.  We will truly miss her.

I enjoyed my term as president and am proud to have led our branch.  Thanks to everyone for your support.

I hope to see many of you at our banquet on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Dutch Haven Restaurant.

Take care.

         Pat

American Association of University Women
Lock Haven Pennsylvania Branch
Minutes of the Branch Meeting of April 5, 2007

The American Association of University Women, Lock Haven Branch met on April 5, 2007 at Great Island Presbyterian Church with 15 members in attendance. Officers in attendance were Pat Burd, Angela Black, Andie Bennett, Carol Hildebrand, and Michele Long.

Reports of Officers

Secretary:  The minutes of the March meetings were approved as circulated.

Fiscal Officer:  Angela Black reported that the balance in the checking account as of 4/5/07 was $1,010.86 and the balance in the savings account as of that date was $1,547.92.  The total balance was $2,558.78.  Angela reported that beginning in 2008 tax-exempt organizations with less than $5000.00 revenue will have to file with the IRS.

Program Vice President:  Andie Bennett reported that the next meeting will be our annual dinner at Dutch Haven Restaurant at 6:00 on May 3, 2007.  A sign–up sheet for the dinner will be available throughout the book sale.

Membership Vice-President:  No report.

Election of Officers for 2007-2009

Lois Day, Amy Carroll, and Pat Burd made up the nominating committee.  Amy reported that the nominees were Andie Bennett for President, Dianne Whitaker for Vice-President, and Bonnie Rosamilia for Secretary.  It was moved and seconded to accept the nominating committee’s report.  The motion carried.  As there were no nominations from the floor the nominations were closed.  Roberta Doyle moved that we accept the nominees by acclimation.  The motion carried and the secretary cast the ballot for the nominees.

Committee Reports

Care and Concern:  It was reported that Betty Breon should receive a card from Care and Concern Committee.  Pat stated that she would let Jerry know.

Write Read Write:  Nell Carnein reported that she will pick up the letters from the students and pass them out at the May meeting.

Book Sale:  Toni Tomasi reported that there are still some time slots which need to be filled for workers at the book sale.  Toni passed around a sign-up sheet.  Roberta Doyle placed ads for the book sale with WNEP and WPSU and has an article written for the Express.

Education Foundation/Legal Advocacy Fund:  Beth Brobst passed around the envelope for donations to the Legal Advocacy Fund.  Beth reported that she has flyers concerning our scholarships available for anyone who is willing to place the flyers in appropriate places throughout the community.

Children’s Festival:  AAUW will man a refreshment booth at the Children’s Festival.  Lisa May is chairing the committee this year and she sent sign-up sheets around for help at the festival.

Unfinished Business

Red Cross Blood Drive:  Pat Burd reported that our Branch will sponsor a blood drive at the Dunnstown Fire Hall on June 20, 2007.  Pat stated that she will have sign-up sheets available throughout the book sale for members to volunteer for jobs and time slots during the drive and will also e-mail if she needs additional volunteers.  We will need callers, snacks, servers, and escorts at the drive.

Update on Thrivent Supplement:  Carol Hildebrand and Angela Black reported that our Branch has tax-exempt status under the umbrella of AAUW National.  Therefore we will be able to have a check from Thrivent made out to our Branch rather than having the checks made out to each scholarship recipient.  Carol reported that the Tiadaghton Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has agreed to supplement our book sale proceeds by $1600.00.

New Business

Central Mountain Scholarships:  Presentation of service awards and scholarships at Central Mountain is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2007.  We have $200.00 budgeted for awards.  Dianne Whittaker volunteered to present the awards at Central Mountain.  Laura Long suggested that we give one award at Central Mountain and one at Bucktail.  Laura agreed to find out from Bucktail the procedure for giving service awards and report back to the membership at the next meeting.

Convention Honorees:  Pam Blesh will receive the Distinguished Accomplishment Award.  Roberta Doyle will receive the Emerging Star Award and Dianne Whittaker will receive the Outstanding Woman Award.

As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Next Meeting:  May 3, 2007, 6:00 p.m., Dutch Haven Restaurant

Carol Hildebrand, Secretary

A Sad Note

The following note came from the LHU community concerning one of our former members:

We are saddened to share the passing of Dr. Renuka Biswas, professor emerita and past department chair of the Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, and Geography Department. She passed away Sat., 4/7 at 5:30 p.m. (Indian standard time) in Calcutta, India. She divided her time living in both India and New York. She was cremated according to Hindu tradition on Sun., 4/8.
Condolences to the family can be forwarded to her nephew (who was also an LHU graduate).

June 20, 2007

Sponsored by AAUW

Dear Branch Members and Friends,

Our Blood Drive will soon be upon us.  I met with Susan Ricker, and she feels we need to prepare for approximately 80 donors.

Based on the folks who filled out the sign-up sheet during the book sale, the volunteers are listed below.  Clearly, more help is needed!

If you have questions or wish to add your name to the list, please contact me.

Callers:

            Lisa May                                  Diane Whitaker

            Laura Long                               Margaret Irwin

Putting Posters up in Town:

            Pat Burd

Refreshments:

            Toni Tomasi                             Laura Long

            Lisa May                                  JoAnn Marcinkevage

            Bonnie Rosamilia

Working in Fire Hall  (kitchen and escorting donors)—two hour shifts

          12:00—2:00                   2:00—4:00                     4:00-6:00

Toni Tomasi                             Nadia Avers                             JoAnn Marcinkevage

Pat Burd                                   Pat Burd                                   Pat Burd

I believe we have enough members as Callers.

I would like someone else to help with putting posters up in town (two weeks before blood drive)

Refreshments--more members will need to volunteer cookies and juice.  If we plan for 80 donors (two cookies/crackers apiece) we will need approximately 14 dozen.  Juice is a little difficult to plan. I’m thinking around 10 gallons (8 donors per gallon).

Working in fire hall

We need more volunteers!!!  Please contact me.

Thanks, Pat
