LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Chapter

Lock Haven, PA

Pat Burd, President

Editors:  Diane Whitaker & Bobbie Way

Greetings from Pat

Dear Branch Members,

I’m certain all of us are looking forward to spring and getting outdoors more.  True winter weather arrived a bit late, but let us know what the season is about.  We had some really cold days.  I used my fireplace day and night for four straight days.

In February we enjoyed Liz Mullens, Provost at Penn College.  She spoke to us about the Glass Ceiling.  In March, Casey Phillips, a tenth grade student at Central Mountain and a People to People Ambassador, spoke to us about her trip to Australia.  Both presenters were informative and interesting.

Lynn Cruse and Michele Terry were presented with the Gateway to Equity Award in honor of International Women’s Day.  They certainly were the perfect choice for the award.  Thanks to Jo Anne Hoberman and Becky Gilbert for doing all the work involved in presenting the award.

Thursday, April 5, 2007, will be our business meeting.  We will be electing a President, Program Vice President, and Secretary.  Also at that meeting, Michele Long will lead our book discussion on Farmworker’s Daughter.

Please keep June 20th open on your calendar for the Red Cross Blood Drive.  I’ll be contacting members for all that’s involved for the event.

We will meet upstairs at Great Island Presbyterian Church at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2007.  I hope to see a lot of you there.

Sincerely,

         Pat

Unfinished Business

Creating an Honor for Middle School Girls

Pat Burd asked if anyone would be willing to serve on a committee in order to plan an event for honoring middle school girls next year.  Andie Bennett and Sandy Hammann agreed to serve on the committee with Pat. Roberta Doyle suggested that Pat also ask Bonnie Rosamilia.

Education Grant

The Board recommended that, in light of the fact that Matt Zerby has been taking courses at Lock Haven University, the $1000.00 that has been held in the treasury for his use toward his further education be paid out to him at this time.  This recommendation was approved.

New Business

Nominating Committee:  Pat reported that the following offices will be open for election in April:  President, Secretary, and Program Vice-President.  Pat agreed to serve as the Board member on the nominating committee.  Two additional members are needed for the committee.  Angela Black nominated Lois Day and Amy Carroll.  Both agreed to serve and the members approved their nomination.  The election will be held at the April meeting.

Input for AAUW-PA:  Pat reported that AAUW–PA is seeking the names of members who have achieved a distinguished activity/accomplishment in the past year for the convention yearbook.  Pat suggested submitting Pam Blesh’s name and the membership agreed.  They are also seeking the names of members who died during the past year for the yearbook.  Pat will submit Jane Arnone’s name.

The board of AAUW-PA is trying to gather ideas for community projects which could be accomplished by branches with a small number of members.  Pat will submit the Tiger Den project, Write Read Write, and the blood drive.

Use of Correctional Facility Inmates for Book Sale:  Pat asked if anyone had ideas of where we could obtain help for the book sale other than use of the inmates since we have to transport any inmates released for work.  JoAnn Marcinkevage volunteered to give Pat some names of people to contact for help.

As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Carol Hildebrand, Secretary

American Association of University Women
Lock Haven Pennsylvania Branch
Minutes of the Branch Meeting of March 1, 2007

Following an informative talk by student Casey Phillips about her trip to Australia with People-to-People last summer, the meeting was called to order by President, Pat Burd.  The meeting was held at the Great Island Presbyterian Church with 18 members and 4 guests present.

In honor of International Women’s Day, March 8, the recipients of this year’s Gateway to Equity Award were announced.  Jo Anne Hoberman introduced Lynn Cruse who has taught some 33 years.  Becky Gilbert introduced Michele Terry who is the Health and Wellness Coordinator for Big Brothers-Big Sisters.  Both women were presented with a certificate.

Reports of Officers

Secretary:  Minutes were approved as circulated.

Fiscal Officer:  Balance on hand as of 3/1/07 was $2,525.89.  Copy of Financial Report attached.

Program Vice President

Andie Bennett announced that the next meeting would be held April 5 upstairs at Great Island.  Michele Long will lead the discussion on “Growing Up Mexican in America.”

Committee Reports

Book Sale:  Toni passed around the Book Sale schedule for members to sign.  It will be printed in the next Lockletter.

Education Foundation:  Beth reported that the scholarship applications will be available at the Ross Library March 15.  Some changes were made.  Members were urged to seek out undergraduate applicants as there was only one last year.  Fliers were distributed to be placed in public locations.

Nominating:  Chairman Lois Day reported the following nominees for 2007-2009:

President:  Andie Bennett

Program Vice President:  Diane Whittaker

Secretary:  Bonnie Rosamilia

The other members of the committee were Amy Carroll and Pat Burd.

New Business

Jo Anne Hoberman moved that the Branch enter into an agreement with Thrivent for 2007.  The motion was seconded and approved.  Thrivent may supply additional funding for scholarships if AAUW turns over the Book Sale profits to them.  They would not award the money directly to the Branch since the Lock Haven Branch is not a 501(c)(3).

The Children’s Festival is set for April 28 and will be chaired by Lisa May.

The AAUW PA Convention will be held in Scranton, April 27-29th.

The Loc Haven Branch will sponsor a Blood Drive June 20th at the Dunnstown Fire Hall.

Nell reported that the books for Write-Read-Write were delivered the 23rd.  Laura took pictures of the students receiving their books.

Diane Whittaker announced several events will be held at the Ross Library to honor Women’s History Month.  Events include a talk on Domestic Violence, one on Caregiving for Patients of Alzheimer’s and several others.

The next Board meeting will be held at the Ross Library March 15.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Editor’s note:  the March Minutes were submitted by Linda Frye.

WRW update

I wish to thank everyone involved in this year's WRW Project.  Laura Long and I delivered the books to the students at Liberty-Curtin Elementary School on Feb. 22nd.  The books were received by the kids with a great deal of enthusiasm and warm thanks!

Laura took pictures so if you'd like a copy of one with your kid(s) in it please let me know and we'll see that you get one.  We will be receiving our final letter at our May meeting (picture can be included then) and will be mailed to those unable to attend this meeting.

Thank you again for making this a very successful project!       Nell

From the EF Chair

The applications for graduate and undergraduate educational aid, to be awarded by our Branch in July, are available at the main desk in Ross Library.  An applicant must have been a resident of Clinton County for at least 4 years.  Other requirements are listed below.  All applications must be submitted by June 1, to give the award committee time to consider each application carefully.

Undergraduate educational aid is to help women whose education has been interrupted due to family or financial reasons, and who wish to follow a vocation for which a four-year college degree will be required.  The undergraduate applicant must be at least three years beyond high school graduation, and accepted for the year 2007-2008 at an accredited college or university in a bachelor's degree program.  In addition, she will have been in college when her studies were interrupted, having earned at least a quarter of the credits required for the degree.

An applicant for graduate educational aid must have been accepted at an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program, and have been a resident of Clinton County for at least 4 years, not only as a student at LHU.

AAUW Lock Haven Branch members can help the educational aid award process in the following ways:

1. Bring in lots of books to be sold at our Book Sale, and buy lots of books while you are sorting, stacking, and arranging books--not to mention encouraging other customers to buy, buy, buy.  The money made at the Book Sale determines how much aid can be awarded this year.

2. When you come to the April meeting, please have in mind a place where you can hang a poster, a spot where a likely candidate might read it.  Take a poster(s) (distributed at Branch meetings) and be sure to post it.

3. Spread the news about the AAUW educational aid program, so that we have the benefit of word-of-mouth publicity, as well as print, radio, and TV media, to let all eligible women know about AAUW educational aid available to them.
