LOCKLETTER
AAUW Lock
Haven Chapter
Lock Haven, PA |

Greetings from
Pat
Dear
Branch Members,
There’s something about the first snowfall that brings back
happy memories. While looking out the window on January 10th
(our first snowfall), I thought of my daughter and her
friends, in the snow, going down the sliding board in the
backyard. It’s not your typical snow sport, but they made
it quite an event.
We have happy memories of our December meeting in which we
celebrated AAUW’s 125th anniversary. It was so
nice having Margaret, Beth, Natalie and Jo Anne present as
four of our charter members. Thanks to Lisa May, we all
took home a Carolina Star. She helped us as a group and
individually. We are grateful for her tenacity and her
patience.
Keith Wood, Financial Associate with Thrivent Financial,
spoke to us in January. He presented “Intermissions” a
short workshop-type program. He had an easy-going, calm way
of covering the objectives which are to discover the
positive influences in our lives and how to best channel
time and talents.
We met, in January, at Ross Library for our first Price and
Sort of 2007. Things are on the move leading to our book
sale.
At our January meeting, we received our letters from the
children for Write Read Write. Please have the books for
our February meeting. If you can’t attend, make
arrangements for another member to deliver your book.
We will meet at Ross Library, Saturday, February 3, 2007, at
10:00 a.m. Our speaker will be Lizabeth Mullens, Provost at
Penn Tech. Her subject will be Leadership Skills. Lunch
will follow at Ruby Tuesdays. I hope to see a lot of you at
the next meeting and also at lunch.
Sincerely,
Pat |

group within the community to partner with our Branch on
this project. The meeting date and time will be announced.

LAF's 25th
Anniversary--A Birthday of Note
Since 1981, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund has helped
students, faculty, staff, and administrators in higher
education challenge discriminatory practices such as sexual
harassment, denial of tenure or promotion, pay inequity, and
inequality in women's athletic programs. The program began
in a small way in 1981, the year that Ronald Reagan
succeeded Jimmy Carter as president of the United States and
Sandra Day O'Connor was confirmed as the first female U.S.
Supreme Court Justice. This was also the year that AAUW
celebrated its 100th birthday.
By 2006-07, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund has been well
enough supported by AAUW members and friends to become the
nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex
discrimination in higher education. Since 1981, LAF has
contributed over $1.3 million to over 100 cases. It has
published groundbreaking research and honored notable women
and innovative university programs that have made
significant progress for women on campus.
Our AAUW branch has a goal of $5.00 per member toward the
LAF fund, this year. Usually, members make their
contributions at our branch meetings. If you cannot make it
to the meetings, our Fiscal Officer, Angela Black, would be
happy to receive your check. Then you too would be a part
of this support system for those seeking justice in the face
of sex discrimination.

To the LockLetter Editor
22 Parkwood Drive
Lock Haven, PA 17745
First of all let me say “thank you” to the Chapter for
continuing to send me a copy of the Lockletter. As some of
you know I have a great fondness for the Chapter and
continue to admire what the Lock Haven Chapter is able to do
for the Community. When people in Illinois ask why I do not
belong to AAUW out here, I list some of the accomplishments
that Lock Haven has done, and then I ask what they are doing
for their community. Their answers indicate that the ones
in my area of IL are more a “social club,” which is not for
me.
Because my husband and I believe in the Lock Haven Chapter
we continue to support the educational endeavors of those
single (or divorced) moms that need to have further
education to get a job with a living wage. Enclosed you
will find our annual check in the amount of $300.00 to be
used for scholarships.
We prefer that it be given to local undergraduate level
applicants, but realize that is not always possible. It is
not to be sent to the AAUW National Funds since they ONLY
give scholarships to graduate students. (At least that is
what they told us several years ago.)
Beth Brobst has written me several wonderful informative
letters telling me about the scholarships given. Thank you.
I normally send it to Natalie, but I am not sure if she and
Chuck are in Lock Haven or traveling, so to expedite it, I
am mailing it to you.
Thank you for every thing that you continue to do.
Sincerely,
Pamela & Gene Piette |

About WRW
All books should be wrapped (as a gift) with a letter from
you with your colored dot on it, and turned in at the
February 3rd meeting. If you are unable to attend, books
can be turned in at the front desk of the Ross Library—ask
to have them put in Diane's mailbox, or call me and we'll
make other arrangements. We would like to distribute the
books by the middle of February, if not sooner.
Any questions or problems call Nell 726-7071.

About the Book Sale
The next price
and sort will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 9:00
at the Ross Library. It is likely that we will have a
price and sort every Wednesday morning at the same time.
However, an e-mail will go out to all members prior to each
price and sort to confirm this. If you do not have
e-mail and wish to confirm before you make the trip to the
library, please call Toni Tomasi or Carol Hildebrand.
