LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Chapter

Lock Haven, PA

Pat Burd, President

Editors:  Diane Whitaker & Bobbie Way

Greetings from Pat

Dear Branch Members,

Many of us enjoyed Candidates’ Night in October at the court house.  It was fast-moving and informative.  The candidates and those representing candidates were all accomplished speakers and got their points across.  It felt good to be involved.  Let’s all get out and vote in November.

To many of us, autumn is our favorite time of year.  I love the vivid colors of trees, the dry, crisp air, and the town festivals on weekends.  All of the above are reminders to have things checked around the house to prepare for the cold days ahead.

We will meet November 2nd, at the Clinton County Communications Center on Cree Drive at 7:00 p.m. to tour the facilities.  I hope to see a lot of you there.  Invite a friend, a potential member to the meeting.  It would be a casual way to introduce a friend to our group.

Sincerely,

         Pat

A Message from the Secretary

As there was no business meeting in October due to Candidates’ Night, there are no October minutes for the Lockletter.  However, the following correction should be made to the September minutes as the degrees being pursued by two of our scholarship recipients were reversed.  The third paragraph of the September minutes should read as follows:  Beth Brobst introduced the two scholarship recipients who were able to attend – Lisa Ertel who is pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy at Neuman College and Tracy Foster who is pursuing a BS in nursing at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Carol Hildebrand, Secretary

December Meeting Information

The program for the December meeting is making a Carolina Snowflake like the one that appeared on the AAUW Christmas tree last year at the Ross Library (see picture above).  I will need an idea of how many individuals plan to participate in this event so I may have an adequate amount of supplies available.  If you think you might (it does not have to be a definite yes), then please contact me at lmay21@comcast.net or 769-2584.  There will be a $3 charge for the materials.  You will also need to bring 16 clothespins, a dishpan (this could possibly be shared between two people), and a hand towel.

FYI

Please change Roberta Doyle’s email address in your Yearbook to robtadoyle@comcast.net.

Helping and Meals

I spoke to Tammy Kiser this morning and she seems set with hoagies from an area store for the noon meal.  Our help with casseroles will be needed for the evening meal.  She will be receiving some pasta dishes, pizzas, and hoagies at that time from local businesses but in limited amounts.  If you would like to make a salad or casserole, please get it to the Fire Hall #5 on Bellefonte Avenue by 4:15 p.m.  I would like to keep track of how much she’ll receive from our group, so just send me an e-mail if you plan to help in that way.  Also, please let me know if you want to help with setting up and cleaning after.  The time you would be needed is 4:30—6:00 p.m.

Here’s what I have for Friday, November 3rd:

Helping in the fire hall from 11:30—1:00

Ellie Zimmerman, Toni Tomasi, Roberta Doyle, Nell Carnein, Pat Burd

Helping in the fire hall from 4:30—6:00

Bonnie Rosamilla (if she can), Jackie Whitling, Nicolette Miller, Pat Burd (I might return)

Meals (casseroles—salads)

Betty Nelson, Toni Tomasi, Lisa May, Pat Burd, Carol Hildebrand, Margaret Irwin, Roberta Doyle,
Jackie Whitling

Hopefully, this will all fall into place.  It’s a difficult situation to judge if it will.  There are so many local restaurants helping in large and small amounts, other volunteers besides us, and possibly people that haven’t even thought of it yet that will just pop up with help or food.

Please remember to put your meal in a disposable container and use a paper cup with handles to scoop out portions or a throw-away spoon.

Thanks, Pat

Election Day is Tuesday, November 7

Take These Three Actions to Get Ready for Election Day

1.  Be Sure That You Are Registered to Vote.
If you’ve never registered to vote or if you’ve moved since you last registered, then you will need to register in order to vote on November 7.  AAUW’s Two-Minute Activist has a feature that fills out the National Voter Registration Form with your information and addresses it so you can print and mail it. Register to vote now.  Several states require registrations to be filed 30 days before the election, so timing is important.

The Power of One Vote

2.  Encourage Other Women to Register and Vote.
Forward this e-card to other women you know and encourage them to register to vote, too.  Talk with women in your community about actions that Congress has taken – or not taken – on issues that affect their lives and how important it is that women have a voice in the political process.

3.  Get Informed and Speak Out!
Read AAUW’s Congressional Voting Record for the 109th Congress to find out how your elected officials voted on issues important to women and girls.  Use AAUW's online Two-Minute Activist to tell your members of Congress where you stand on the issues important to women and girls.  Sign up for to AAUW’s Action Network to receive weekly e-mail alerts for immediate action on AAUW priority issues.
