LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Chapter

Lock Haven, PA

Greetings from Pat

Dear Branch Members,

We, in AAUW, are just one group that will miss Jayne Arnone.  She exemplified all that an ambitious, caring woman would be.  I always felt proud to be in a group with Jayne.  She made everyone feel at ease, while displaying poise and competency in whatever the task.  Her career as a teacher can be described as prolific.  She took on the leadership of many aspects of the job and branched out into creating awareness in the school district as well as the community.  She touched many, many lives and will always be thought of fondly.  I know we all will miss her.

The first branch meeting at my house was a big success.  We had nearly 30 members present, enjoyed each other’s company, had some delicious pot-luck meals, and made plans for the months ahead.  We enjoyed meeting scholarship award winners Lisa Ertel Hayden and Tracy J. Foster.

Our October meeting will be Candidates’ Night.  Laura’s presentation to our group on her preparations, including the letter she sent to the candidates was certainly impressive.

Early in November we will be present to help with the Tiger Den Playground.  More inclusive planning will reach you via e-mail or by phone.

Sincerely,

         Pat

Preparing for Candidates’ Night

Meeting at Laura Long’s house
980 Center Street
Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.

Laura has received several responses from candidates for November’s election.  We would like to invite the public, so pertinent questions for the candidates or their representatives are needed.

Democratic candidate Don Hilliard, running for Congress, and a Green Party candidate will be present that evening.

Others who will represent the actual candidates will more than likely have a prepared speech; however, we still should have questions for them to look over before their talks.

Those candidates that will send representatives are:  Governor Rendell, Lynn Swan, and Green Party people.

Please keep in mind AAUW’s Mission Statement and our role in positive societal change.  We should all feel some connection in helping at election time.

Please contact Patricia Burd at 769-7087 or aburd@kcnet.org  so I can let Laura know how many will be attending to help develop questions for the candidates or their representatives.

If you will not be able to attend the meeting on October 3rd, but have questions you would like to submit, please e-mail them to Laura at lauralong1@excite.com , or leave a message on her phone at 748-7316.

We’re hoping many of you will attend!

EDUCATION

Write-Read-Write

It is again time to start planning for this year's project.  I am hoping to get permission to contact either one or two (depending on your response) 4th grade classrooms at Liberty-Curtin Elementary School.

Briefly (for those of you who have never participated):  Students write letters introducing themselves and telling of their interests (esp. related to books).  Each participating member will receive a letter (or two) and buy and gift wrap a book for that student (keeping in mind age level and interests).  The child will read the book and write another letter to you telling you what they liked about the book.

The time line for this project is (approx.) first letter will be written sometime in Nov. and they will be distributed by the Dec. meeting.  The books will be collected at the Feb. meeting, I will deliver them and collect the second letters, which will be distributed at the April or May meeting (I'll try to get a photo also of each child receiving his or her book).

If you are interested in participating this year please email (ncarnein@kcnet.org) or phone (726-7071) me no later than Oct. 15th.  If you are willing to have two students please let me know that also (this will determine whether I contact two classroom teachers or one).  If you have any questions, let me know.  I would also like someone to assist with the book delivery and taking photos.

Thanks, Nell Carnein

BOOK SELECTION

To narrow down the selection of a book for this year, the following choices have been suggested.  Please let Pat know your “selection.

Farmworker's Daughter:  Growing Up Mexican in America  by Rose Castillo Guilbault (2006)

In this memoir, Guilbault invites us into her girlhood, revealing what it was like to grow up as a Mexican immigrant in a farming community during the turbulent 1960's.  With openness, courage, and charm, she recalls her early struggles to learn English, to fit in with schoolmates with their Barbie dolls and cupcakes, to win approval, and to bridge the tensions between the home life and the public world to which she is drawn.

Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges (1999)

Surrounded by federal marshals, a 6-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first black student ever at the all-white William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 14, 1960.  Perhaps never had so much hatred been directed at so perfect a symbol of innocence--which makes it all the more remarkable that her memoir, simple in language and rich in history and sepia-toned photographs, is informed mainly by a sort of bewildered compassion.  Literary work describing a personal, deeply moving historical documentary about a staggeringly courageous little girl at the center of events that already seem unbelievable.
