LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Chapter

Lock Haven, PA

Pat Burd, President

Editors:  Nell Carnein & Bobbie Way

Greetings from Pat

Dear Branch Members,

While letting my dog out one morning, I noticed my lawn literally grew over night.  The grass wasn’t that tall, nor was it as green when I shut the door for the night.  Spring is definitely here and wonderful warm days are ahead.

I’m looking forward to my grandson Emmett’s first birthday in May.  My daughter, who won’t let him have sweets, has promised me I will see him enjoying birthday cake and ice cream.  I am so looking forward to the event.

In May, our branch will install Angela Black as Treasurer.  Many thanks go to Amy Carroll who held the position for four years and did such a wonderful job.   We will also install both Michele Long and JoAnne Hoberman as Membership Vice Presidents.  Many thanks go to Jayne Arnone who also held that position for four years.  She is to be commended for doing a fine job while having health problems.

Betty Nelson and I attended the PA-AAUW convention in Johnstown in April.  It was a busy day with every minute filled with speakers and activities.  Because we wanted to return by dark, we missed some socializing, but still had a fine time.

Our business meeting in April was a success.  We elected the Treasurer and Membership Vice Presidents and we honored Lisa May as Emerging Star and Carol Hildebrand as Outstanding Woman of our branch.  They both have done so much to help things run smoothly.  Thanks, Carol and Lisa!

I thought our book discussion on Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress could be described as a lively discussion.  It was just a fun evening where everything seemed to fall into place.

I hope to see a lot of you at the Book Sale and at our May dinner at Dutch Haven.

Sincerely,

         Pat

New Business

Election of Treasurer and Membership Vice President: Lisa May presented nominees Angela Black for Treasurer and Michele Long and JoAnne Hoberman for Membership Co-Vice Presidents.  Pat asked for nominations from the floor.  As there were no nominations from the floor, the nominations were closed and the secretary cast the ballot for the nominees.

Convention Synopsis:  Pat reported that Karen Rowe, President of AAUW – PA, revealed that she has been diagnosed with MS.  Also announced at the convention is the fact that Pennsylvania now has three less branches this year.  This has caused a redistricting of the branches and our branch is now in District 2 instead of District 1.  Our branch received an award for our donations to the Legal Advocacy Fund, a thank you for our participation in the Gateway to Equity Program, and a PA Star Award.

Senior Awards:  Awards will be presented at assembly on May 23, 2006. Pat asked for volunteers to give out the two awards.  Laura Long and Betty Nelson agreed to present the awards.

Pat announced that all information for inclusion in the Lockletter must be sent to Bobbie Way by April 12, 2006.
