LOCKLETTER

 Letter from Laura

Dear AAUW Branch Members:

Welcome to a brand new Program Year !  This is bound to be exciting, informative, and full of opportunities for growth and enjoying time with friends, old and new.

There are some concerns regarding financing at the National level.  The downturn in the stock market and declining memberships were not considered in preparing past years budgets.  AAUW got overextended and the new administration had to make some significant changes. AAUW Educational Foundation and Legal Advocacy Fund, which is a limited liability corporation, are three separate entities.  They are structured in different ways as to how they handle their money.  Of all the choices of how to handle the situation it has been decided to make LAF a sub-entity to EF.

EF owns the building that all three use in Washington, DC.  None had been paying rent.  When IRS looked at the books, it was not happy.  AAUW was told to figure out a plan and submit it to IRS for approval.  That does not mean that they will approve the plan that is established.  They may have to go back to the drawing board.  Meanwhile, back rents have been paid and they are all up to date on that, at least.  I figured that a shortfall for AAUW and LAF would mean a windfall for EF, but that didn't happen.?????

Now, they are considering whether to sell the building (it is paid off) or refigure, remodel, and rent space.

Another blow, AAUW has elected unanimously not to pay its $200,000 annual dues to the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) for 2005, because of the financial situation.

Also, the Eleanor Roosevelt teacher's scholarship has been suspended for a two of years.  However, other scholarships have been increased.  We are still invited to donate to the Roosevelt fund.

The Association "Leaders On Loan" Program has been suspended for the time, its budget was $30,000.

I have handouts about all of this that we received at the Leadership Conference on July 24th.  See Betty's article about the wonderful program we experienced.

On the bright side, Pennsylvania has been recognized for its generosity and for its research and programs.

Lifetime Members are invited to receive a new distinction.  For $120, they are invited to join the "One in a Million" club and receive a beautiful pin.  Now, how can you beat that!

Take a look at our wonderful schedule for 2004/2005.  I think it will be diversified and delightful. I hope you agree.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Amy's home on September 2nd.  Thank you Amy for opening your home to us.  We will have an opportunity to meet our scholarship recipients there.  That is what this is all about as far as I am concerned.

Love and Peace, Laura

Minutes of the Branch Meeting of May 6, 2004

The American Association of University Women, Lock Haven Branch met on May 6, 2004 at Beech Creek Furst Corner Restaurant. Laura Long welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. Guests of honor were Matthew Zerby and Hanna Snyder in appreciation of the time they gave to help with the book sale.

Reports of Officers:

Secretary:  There were no minutes from the April meeting due to the absence of the Secretary.

Treasurer:  There were no changes to the treasurer’s report as published in the May Lockletter. A donation will be made to the Key Club and to Interact for their help with the book sale. Pat Burd and Linda Frye agreed to present the donation.

Program Chair:  Andie Bennett reported that she is starting to plan next year’s programs and welcomes input from the membership. A planning meeting will be held on July 15, 2004 at 7:30 at the home of Laura Long. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Membership:  No report.

Education Foundation:  Beth Brobst reported that, thus far, three scholarship applications have been received. Beth asked the members to place flyers concerning the scholarships in public areas of the community so that potential candidates will be made aware of these scholarships.

Book Sale:  Nell Carnein and Toni Tomasi gave Certificates of Appreciation to the husbands of members who helped with the Book Sale and to Hanna and Matt for all of their help with the book sale. Nell reported that we made $5200.00 from the book sale plus $2200.00 from the sale of some of the books on e-bay. Approximately $500.00 in expenses will be paid from that total. A final report on the proceeds from the sale will be made at the next branch meeting.

New Business:

Affiliate Agreement:  Linda Frye informed the members of a letter received from National requesting our branch to sign an Affiliates Agreement. The letter explained that the IRS now requires a formal signed agreement between all AAUW branches and National. The Affiliates Agreement is the formal acknowledgement between the national organization and its affiliated branches. The letter stated that signing the agreement is a condition of remaining an AAUW branch. The Board agreed that Laura should have the agreement reviewed by a lawyer before signing it. The membership will be informed of the lawyer’s recommendation.

Blood Drive:  JoAnn Marcinkevage asked for volunteers to help with the Blood Drive to be held on June 23, 2004 at St. Agnes from noon to 6:00 pm. JoAnn stated that she is trying to have the site of the drive changed to a place with air conditioning. A sign-up sheet for volunteers was passed around.

Installation:  Amy Carroll was installed as the Treasurer of the branch for another two-year term.

Honors:  Andie Bennett was presented with flowers in recognition of her outstanding work over the past year.

News of AAUW-PA Diamond Campaign at the Valley Forge ’04 State Convention

Convention attendees, after hearing Lislike Annextein, Esq., LAF Directior and Elena Silva, PhD., Director of Research for EF, gave over $3,400.  The total so far is $67,115, and that is 89% toward the goal of $75,000.  Dr. Silva explained the research project our funds are supporting:  “Fighting for Tenure: Cases of Sex Discrimination in Academia, a collaborative project of AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund and the Educational Foundation.”  “Because of your generous gifts, AAUW will be able to publish it, nationally distribute it, and send out plaintiffs to personally tell their stories and have a wide-spread media blitz.”

Of the $75,... Diamond Donor Goal, still needed is $7,885—11%.  All donations are fully tax deductible by law.  Please make checks payable to Diamond Donor Campaign and put AAUW-PA on the memo line.  Mail to Karen Rowe, LAF Liaison, 2498 Seneca Dr., York, PA 17404.  We are invited to celebrate AAUW-PA’s 75th anniversary by wearing the beautiful hand-crafted pin, available for $20.00.
