 Letter from Laura

Dear Members:

The Lock Haven Branch Thirty-fifth Anniversary Luncheon was a wonderful success.  It was truly a feel-good great time.  We honored the three charter members of our branch, Beth Brobst, Natalie Newcomer, and JoAnn Settlemyer.  Thanks to their vision and initiative, we have accomplished so much for women and girls and for our community.

Linda Tozier, President of AAUW Pennsylvania, was pleased to share the occasion with us and to enjoy the hospitality of Betty and Russell Nelson the evening before.  We enjoyed her "big view" of what is going on with AAUW National and Pennsylvania.  Her stories about her personal history in AAUW were delightful and informative.

Our formal meeting was kept to a minimum, however, the election of officers did take place.  Amy Carroll was unanimously re-elected as Treasurer and Jayne Arnone was unanimously re-elected as Membership Vice President.  Congratulations to both and thank you for serving our organization so well.  The Inauguration will take place at our June 6, dinner meeting.  We look forward to seeing all of you there, in Beech Creek!

The Book Sale is upon us!  The weather forecast is great!  We hope to sell lots of books so as to provide several scholarships and to help the beleaguered Ross Library with a donation.  See you there!

Memorial contributions will be collected at the book sale for our dear friends and AAUW members, Joan Enger and Roberta Kleinman.  Please be generous in remembering them.  Most likely, we will be purchasing books that reflect their interests to donate to the Ross Library.

A committee has been formed to make policy regarding Cheer and Condolences.  In the past, we asked each other what did we do before and then try to duplicate it.  This has been awkward and inefficient.  Contact Pat Burd, Chair, with your ideas and suggestions.  A report will be submitted at the June 17th Board meeting at Carol Hildebrand's home.

Annual dues, $62.00, will be collected at the book sale, as will contributions to the Millbrook Playhouse Visionary Fund.  We made a four-year commitment last year to support our magical wonderful Playhouse by collecting donations for it.

National Association has contacted us about our relationship to them as a branch.  There are legal, financial, and insurance reasons that they want us to sign an agreement.  It was decided that we should consult with an attorney before signing these papers.

Now it is Spring and we are all so busy with so much to do.  Today, I smelled the new mowed lawn across the street and watched the male robins protecting their territory in preparation for breeding and nesting time.  My two best friends became grandmothers last week in the same hospital at the same time.  Our little girl is expected in mid-May.  Jayne is off to her son's wedding.  Hold on to your hats, here we gooooooooooo!!!!!

Love and Peace, Laura

May Meeting

We will be having our annual dinner and installation of officers at Furst Corner Restaurant in Beech Creek.   Please arrive at 6:00 p.m. so that we are able to order from the menu at 6:30.  Please join us for a delightful dinner in a Victorian setting and join us while we install Amy and Jayne as our new officers.  Guests are welcome.  Parking is in the rear.

To make a reservation, call Michele Long or email her, or sign up at the Book Sale.  Deadline to make reservations is May 1st.

Thank you to everyone involved!

Applause goes to the Arrangements Committee for the wonderful 35th anniversary luncheon and celebration at Hangar 9 on Saturday, April 3.  Andy Bennett, Pat Burd, Laura Long, Jane Arnone, Betty Nelson, and JoAnn Marcinkevage were the party makers, who produced beautiful favors, colorful bouquets, and a festive birthday cake, all in coordinated colors of teal (for AAUW) and coral (for 35th anniversary).  We were proud to show our state president that Lock Haven is a branch that can still celebrate with lots of enthusiasm and definitely is not "over the hill."

AAUW Scholarships

The applications for our AAUW Branch annual scholarships are now available at Ross Library.  Please ask at the main desk.  Members are asked to help spread the word.  The Branch guidelines for eligibility follow:

Both undergraduate and graduate scholarships are available to women who have been residents of Clinton County for at least four years.

The aim of the undergraduate scholarships is to help women whose education has been interrupted due to financial or family reasons and who clearly wish to follow a vocation for which a four-year college degree or even a higher degree will be required.  The undergraduate scholarship is named in honor of Pam Wagner Piette, formerly of Lock Haven, and a supporter of AAUW.  The graduate scholarship is named in honor of the late Marilyn Gardner, a past President of the Lock Haven AAUW Branch and past President of the Pennsylvania Division of AAUW

An applicant for an undergraduate scholarship must be at least three years beyond high school graduation, and accepted for the year 2003-2004 at an accredited college or university in a bachelor's degree program.  In addition, she will have been in college when her studies were interrupted, having earned at least a quarter of the credits required for her degree.

An applicant for a graduate scholarship must have been accepted at an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program.

Applications are to be submitted by June 15, 2004, and the scholarship committee's decision will be announced soon after July 15.

For further information, call Elizabeth S. Brobst at 769-6895.

Dear AAUW Members:

I must apologize for the error I made in the last Lockletter announcement of the dues amount for next year.

At the last national convention, delegates voted to increase the national dues by $2.00 for 2004 – 2005.  I had misunderstood the effective date, so I had an “uh-oh” moment when Linda Tozier referred to the dues increase at our April luncheon.

Dues for the upcoming program year are:
Local                11.00
State                 10.00
National            41.00
Total                 62.00

I encourage you to renew your membership in the Lock Haven Branch.  Please make your checks payable to AAUW.  You may renew your membership at the book sale, at the May meeting, or by mail to me before the end of June.

If you renewed your membership before April 12, you do not need to send me any additional money.

Again, I am sorry for my error.

Sincerely,

Amy Carroll
